We’re saddened to report the news that Don Newcombe has died at the age of 92. The strong right-hander won 149 games for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and two other teams from 1949-60. He was a pioneer in the early days of integration, the third African American pitcher to make an appearance in Major League Baseball.
Big “Newk” was a Negro Leagues veteran who catapulted to stardom with the Dodgers, winning Rookie of the Year honors in 1949, a World Series championship in 1955, and the NL MVP and Cy Young Awards in 1956.
